If you’re one of those people like me who shy away from complicated recipes and instructions, you just might love this one. It’s so simple and the cake turns out dark, moist, and very chocolaty. And it’s never not turned out. I started out with another recipe but made a few changes and added a chocolate bar and it’s quite a bit nicer now, imho.  This recipe makes one 9×13 in. or 9×9 in. cake.

So, you preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, or 175 C.

In a large bowl, blend with a spoon:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 to 2 ½ cups sifted brown sugar (depending on how sweet you want it. I like it with 2, Mike likes it with more)
  • 5/8 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

Add and whisk till just smooth:

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 2 teaspoons white vinegar
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup black chocolate bar shavings (I use 1 Black chocolate bar, which is 75g (2.6 oz.). You can grate the chocolate bar, but I prefer chopping (more like shaving) it with a knife so that it looks like mostly powder with some chunks which are about the size of a grain of rice). Don’t use milk chocolate.

Lightly oil your baking pan and bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40-45 minutes.

Let it cool before removing from the pan.
